    • Under 1980-talet och början av 1990-talet gjorde jag ett drygt sjuttiotal uppdrag för tidningen Uppsala-Demokraten. Jag fotograferade med Nikon FE och Nikon F3, två kameror jag trivdes bra med och som var otroligt pålitliga. I kameraväskan fanns dessutom ett flertal objektiv, en stor Metz-blixt, mängder av Tri-X-filmer samt ett flertal batterier. Bara till en kameramotor behövdes åtta sådana. Väskan var tung att bära på, den slet på rygg och axlar. Uppdragen var alltid att skildra människor, såväl på arbetsplatser som i folkparker och på andra offentliga platser. Jag hade stor frihet att fotografera på mitt eget sätt och att närma mig människor efter egen förmåga. Det var sällan några var negativa till att bli fotograferade. När uppdragen skulle publiceras hade jag ett rikt material att utgå ifrån, och idag, nästan fyrtio år senare, ligger det till grund för denna bok.Många av bilderna har aldrig tidigare visats. Ett fotografi är knutet till en bestämd tid och verklighet samtidigt som det är tidlöst och kan ses om och om igen, när som helst. Som betraktare fyller vi bilden med innehåll, känslor och betydelser, såsom jag fyller bilderna i min fotobokssamling. Med hjälp av det skrivna ordet kan man sedan förankra det avfotograferade i tid och miljö och fördjupa dess sammanhang. Det har Maths Isacson, professor emeritus i ekonomisk historia, och Bo Larsson, förutvarande antikvarie på Upplandsmuseet, numera på Stadsmuseet i Stockholm, gjort. Jag tror att deras ord och mina bilder tillsammans kan öka förståelsen för människors liv och vardag i ett Uppsala som visserligen ligger nära i tiden, men som ändå är förgånget.

    • The thesis studies two small family businesses situated in the rural area of Uppsala County. Both were active during the twentieth century (1933 and henceforth and 1936 – 1976 respectively) and had the agriculture surroundings and bigger industries as their principal customers. Workshops of this kind have existed in a great number. Despite this they are hardly mentioned in scholarly literature concerning the Swedish twentieth-century industrial development. This has concentrated mainly on large industries; the time period has also been characterized as “the highly industrialized epoch” with large-scale production and rationalization as its distinctive features. The overall purpose of the thesis is therefore to analyse and highlight the function of these workshops. Four related questions are in focus, each one discussed in a particular section: the production process; the relation workshop – family; the relation workshop – surroundings (i.e. customers and employees); the motives of the owners. The close connection with family members as well as with customers and employees are shown in various ways. It is also maintained that profits were not the prime mover of the owners. The thesis is based on interviews combined with a number of other sources. Among the latter are photographs and artefacts. By following a context gathering method, it is possible to use the most important product from each workshop as a guiding principle through their activities. Another important analytic method used is the analysis of how different work tasks in the family related to each other and to the workshop.
